AYMARA
Las comunidades aymara que habitan el altiplano andino desde hace miles de años, son herederas de los antiguos imperios Tiwanaku e Inca. Sus habitantes han enfrentando condiciones climáticas adversas, logrando adaptarse a la ausencia de oxigeno y de agua, adquiriendo valiosas habilidades para la textileria, el cultivo en terrazas y la domesticación de camélidos. Ha sido propio de estas comunidades el vivir en pequeños asentamientos, ya sea en valles, quebradas o cerros, los cuales reúnen a familias dedicadas al pastoreo de llamas y alpacas. El vivir en parajes solitarios les ha permitido conservar sus tradiciones y arte. La lengua y la religión les permite identificarse hoy como pueblo, ya que tras la creación de fronteras entre Chile, Argentina y Bolivia se vieron reducidos y separados. Para los aymara la tierra constituye el centro de sus creencias; ella les brinda alimento, agua y hogar. El culto a la pachamama (madre tierra) ha sido reinterpretado, tomando festividades y símbolos cristianos para dar origen a coloridos bailes y carnavales paganos. AYMARA
Having managed to adapt to the rarified air and scarcity of water, the Aymara brave harsh conditions in the Andean altiplano. They outlived the ancient Tiwanaku and Inca Empires. Aymara settlements have dotted the high Andes for thousands of years nestling in valleys, creeks or on hillsides. Typically small communities involve a few families who herd llama and alpaca. Enforced national frontiers between Chile, Argentina and Bolivia have split the Aymara, but their language and rituals still unite a people adept at textile crafts, cultivating their hillside terraces and the domestication of livestock. Isolation has helped to preserve their traditions and art. Aymara beliefs revolve around the Earth, which affords them food, water and shelter. The pachamama (Earth Mother) cult has been reawakened, and now includes Christian icons at their pagan carnivals that are brought to life with vibrant dances. Yet the simplicity and depth of the Andean Cosmovision is clear where Man dominates the heights.
