ALFARERÍA MAPUCHE
La relación con la tierra constituye para los mapuches un elemento esencial en sus creencias y tradiciones. Han sido las mujeres por generaciones las únicas que han podido ejercer este oficio, se las vincula con la tierra y su capacidad progenitora. Las mapuches acuden solas hasta las canteras para obtener el mineral que brinda el color y brillo a las piezas. Recogida la greda y el mineral, se deja secar al sol, se limpia y se amasa con agua y arena fina. De esta forma se va moldeando la figura deseada, para luego pulirla con piedras y darle cocimiento en un fogón a ras de suelo. La alfarería mapuche ha sido siempre muy conservadora respecto a las formas y motivos utilizados en vasijas y jarros, conservando actualmente sus formas originales.

MAPUCHE POTTERY
Mapuche beliefs and traditions are tightly bound to their relationship with the earth. For generations only women make pottery, because of the ties between earth and its fecundity. Women trek alone into the quarries to fetch minerals that give the pottery its color and glint. The clay and minerals are dried in the sun, and then cleaned with water and kneaded with fine sand. The piece is gradually fashioned into shape, and then polished with stones before firing the figure in a kiln in the ground. Still with the original forms, Mapuche pottery has been always been conservative in the shapes and motifs used in jugs and jars.
